2013 Breakout Sessions

 This year’s conference features a wide variety of topics with valuable take-aways that board members, administrators, and teachers can return to their schools and put to use for the benefit of their students.

Detailed Breakout Session Information and Descriptions

Our break out sessions are organized by topics and interest. Some of the sessions may also be workshop sessions. We want to provide an opportunity for conference delegates to participate more actively in the charter school movement, and for several discussions to take place at the same time. A facilitator will present the topic or question to be discussed, and team notes may be taken down with the group’s ideas. The information gathered may be used for future purposes and for sharing information. We feel we have breakout sessions which have clear and realistic objectives, as well as those which present interesting and well-formulated questions for charter school advocates. We hope you will feel more comfortable sharing ideas in smaller groups. If there is an idea which has not been considered please let us know. Please plan your breakout sessions in advance as some rooms may fill up fast.

Participants will experience an acceleration model that implements research based previewing and scaffolding practice and exemplary strategies that raise student achievement. Participants will leave with the knowledge to accelerate and scaffold learning and to increase achievement for all students who are below grade level.


Behavior Management/PBIS in a Charter School – Cheryl Pierce, American Renaissance School

The American Renaissance PBIS team will share their journey to reduce negative student behavior with increased positive behavior through positive interventions. The team will describe the components of Positive Behavior Intervention Systems and will discuss the necessary steps to make PBIS a successful framework for your school. Leaders must have a means for establishing targeted goals and criteria for determining success. Get Ready for the Smarter Assessment:  PARCC – James Spruill, Plymouth Education

The session will examine how the success of Smarter-Balanced/PARCC Assessment’s high stakes testing will be heavily dependent upon effective educational technology integration (EdTech) conjoined to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) comprehensively supported by information technology (IT). To properly prepare for the coming online assessments, school must undergo a paradigm shift from teacher-focused classrooms to 21st century, student-centered learning environments where the domains of EdTech, IT and CCSS are thoroughly integrated. Ramifications will be explored and solutions offered for implementing an EdTech, IT and CCSS curriculum as preparation for Smarter-balanced Assessment’s computer adaptive, online tests with educational technology performance tasks.

Treading on the Charter Brand – Dr. Terry Stoops, Locke Foundation

After nearly 20 years, many charter schools have risen to a high level of prominence and recognition in NC with great demand and long waiting lists of students.  The success of these independent schools has created value in the “charter” brand name.  Now traditional districts are trying to capitalize on this success by requesting the General Assembly to create additional classes of schools they would call  “Local” charters or “Conversion” charters or “District” charters or “Co-op” charters but that are controlled not by independent boards but that would  merely return control to the traditional district board of education.  These attempts will be discussed in light of the current statutory purpose of charter schools to be “independent of existing schools.” If successful, what impact would such pseudo-charters have on present and future real charters?


Teaching Critique To All Students: K-12 – Leslie Paynter, Voyager Academy

Most students do not arrive in our classrooms knowing how to do high-quality work. If they have never seen examples of a good project, an excellent non-fiction or narrative piece of writing or a superior written reflection, no amount of clear instruction can give them a picture in their mind of what they are aiming for in their work.  The strategies of modeling, critique, and revision can take abstract ideas of quality and make them concrete and functional for students; they can lead students to build criteria for what good work looks like; and they can inspire and induce students to become reflective learners.  In many classrooms, some form of critique and revision are used.  However, typically students are paired off and asked to give each other feedback on a draft of writing. The prompt may be vague and the student is asked to give their partner suggestions for improvements. This can be useful, but often it can be a waste of time.  Without a well-defined focus, few students are able of giving insightful, useful feedback in the important areas that need revision. Subsequent drafts of the written work will often show minor, superficial changes, maybe some improvements in mechanics, but no significant growth. We will show the two types of critique, gallery and in-depth. We will discuss the guidelines and the three rules for teaching critique to all students from kindergarten through twelfth grade.  We will stress the importance of vocabulary building during the critique process.  Lastly, we will go through the critique process so that everyone will leave knowing how to begin critique in their school and classrooms.

Attorney Shipman will discuss Class Action Lawsuits as a means of recovering funds resulting from underpayments by districts to charters.  What is a “Class?”  How does a class get certified?  Can my charter school be in the class?  What are the claims?  How much can my school recover?

The presentation/workshop “Finding Funding Opportunities for Charter Schools,” presented by Tammie Knights and associates from the National Charter School Resource Center, provides critical information and tools you can use through a facilitated grant finding workshop. Participants are provided an overview of the federal and private foundation funding landscape as well as some of the top strategies – and common mistakes – to securing funding. Audience participation is highly encouraged throughout the workshop. After sharing favorite search strategies and techniques, the participants are guided through a grant search and preparation exercise tailored to the particular interests of the audience. Participants should walk away with a valuable list of sources, including state and local, federal, and private, to find funding opportunities. They should also learn proven strategies for winning grants from these sources.

In the latter half of the 20th Century, explicit instruction in English grammar was systematically squeezed out of the K-12 curriculum.  In the last few years, it has begun to find its way back into classrooms.  This presentation will address the historical role that grammar has played in education, and it will describe why it should once again be an important part of K-12 schooling.


Active Learning In A Redesigned Classroom – Rob Johnson, NC State University

The primary goal of the Student-Centered Active Learning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies (SCALE-UP) is to establish a highly collaborative, hands-on, and computer-rich interactive learning environment. Educational research indicates that students should collaborate on tasks and be deeply involved with the material they are studying. We promote active learning in a redesigned classroom. The social interaction between students and with their teachers appears to be the “active ingredient” that makes the approach work. The pedagogical methods and classroom management techniques we design and disseminate are general enough to be used in a variety of classes at many types of educational settings.
